What’s on in August

While the big events can be a little too pricey to just take a chance, some of the less well known festivals are much cheaper or even have free concerts.

Sant Feliu de Guíxols: Porta Ferrada Festival

The artists at Festival Porta Ferrada vary widely from year to year and sometimes there is someone worth going to see and sometimes not. It is largely dependent on the styles of music you like. Many of the artists cater to local tastes rather than overseas tourists, but there are sometimes some pretty big names too.

Concerts take place until the third week of August on a stage set up in the port area and it’s well organised with seating for most shows. If you’re in Sant Feliu and find something that interests you then go along. The audience is mainly local and tend to be enthusiastic.

Calella de Palafrugell: Cap Roig Festival

Held in the botanical gardens of Cap Roig castle, near Calella de Palafrugell, this annual Cap Roig Festival runs until the third week of August with performances by a diverse range of artists. Many acts are selected for local audiences, but there are some fairly big names too.

Festival Castell Peralada

Another festival with an mixture of artists in the Festival Perelada. In 2018 it finished with an evening of hip hop and baroque music. How’s that for eclectic? Along the way you’ll find a mix of classical, pop, rock, opera and everything in between.

Platja d’Aro: Nits de Jazz

Every year Platja d’Aro hosts Nits de Jazz, a series of free jazz concerts performed on Friday nights on the main beach.  Running until the end of August, concerts start at 23:00.

Pals: White Summer

Since 2012 White Summer Costa Brava has put on events for all ages every night in early August. The festival combines food and drinks with a series of diverse concerts, dance, magicians, and circus acts between 6pm and 1am. It takes place at Mas Gelabert Masia, a 17th century farmhouse between Pals and Torroella de Montgrí.

Girona: Guitar Festival

Continuing throughout August and into September, the Girona Guitar Festival takes place at a variety of venues in Girona and on a number of coastal resorts. Tickets are low cost or free.

Begur: Music Festival

The Festival de Música de Begur continues until mid August with a variety of mainly local acts.

Festival Torroella de Montgrí

Torroella’s annual music festival was founded in 1981 and consists of a series of mainly classical concerts at a number of venues across the town.

If you’re staying in Torroella or nearby Estartit then the main day of the town’s Festa Major takes place on 25th August. It’s when the whole town parties and worth going along for free concerts and dancing in the streets, food and drink and other events. Celebrations take place for a few days either side of that date, commemorating the town’s patron saint, Sant Genís.
