Getting there: Costa Brava travel

The three main ways of travelling to the Costa Brava are by driving, flying or by train. In this article on how to get to the Costa Brava we consider each of those options.

Road

The most common way of reaching the Costa Brava is by road. Holidaymakers from all over Europe take advantage of the region’s vicinity to the French border and drive down through France.

Apart from Spain, most tourists are from France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. Many head for private holiday properties or one of the many campsites along the coast as well as the tourist hotels.

Depending on where you’re headed you’ll probably arrive from France and continue on the AP7 toll road for some distance. Continuing on the AP7 you’ll reach Barcelona.

Air

Many tourists arrive by air, either into Barcelona or Girona-Costa Brava.

Those flying into Barcelona Airport then continue their journey by train, bus or hire car. But Girona-Costa Brava Airport is also an option and many people may prefer it as it is far quieter than Barcelona. While it has fewer facilities, you don’t have so far to find your gate.

The main airline to fly their is Ryanair, a company that made the airport one of its main European hubs. In doing so it became the catalyst for massive expansion of the airport, which has changed beyond recognition since the beginning of the 21st century.

Train

While the train was always an option, the opening of the AVE high speed train from France made it a more realistic option for reaching the Costa Brava.

The AVE stops at several stations in Catalonia, including Girona and Barcelona. It means that tourists embarking in Paris can reach the Costa Brava within a few hours, certainly in a time comparable with flying when you take into account all the time taken getting to and from airports, as well as the eternal queues for security and boarding.
