Where to buy cheap fuel on the Costa Brava

It’s frightening to compare the price of fuel today with what it was just a few years ago. I remember well when 98 RON petrol was less than a euro per litre, but these days it is well in excess of that, perhaps 50 percent more.

While fuel costs can vary a bit, even on the same stretch of road comparing petrol stations of the same brand such as Repsol, some places do offer a significant discount compared with standard pricing.

The big one on the Costa Brava is the supermarket chain Bon Preu/Esclat, which offers a small discount over other brands to anyone, with generally a more substantial discount to anyone with their loyalty card. The actual discount from EsclatOil does vary, but typically it is 5 to 8 cents per litre cheaper and if you’re filling up and buy from EsclatOil regularly then it all adds up.

The pumps are all modern and customers pay in advance by credit card direct at the pump, or pay by cash close by. The machines are multi-lingual and can speak instructions in English in case you don’t understand Catalan or Castilian.

To activate the additional discount you need to insert your Bon Preu/Esclat loyalty card prior to paying and it will tell you when the discount has been activated. Check the price displayed on the machine though as on one occasion the discount price wasn’t applied, although that was rectified in the shop at the information point.

EsclatOil currently has 18 petrol stations located at Bon Preu and Esclat supermarkets. For current towns where EsclatOil is located click here.
