A visit to Sant Feliu’s Sunday market

When it comes to markets, I always try to avoid them. They’re too crowded and unless I can eat what they’re selling the stalls tend to be packed with stuff I have no intention of buying ever and on those odd occasions that I am dragged along I avoid the clothes stalls as best I can as well as those selling tourist tat.

One of my rare market visits occurred last summer when checking out the market at Platja d’Aro; just before the stalls started packing up one entrepreneurial fruit vendor was handing out pieces of melon. It was delicious and we ended up buying three for the princely sum of €2 – a real bargain. But more recently we went to the market at Sant Feliu de Guíxols on one rather overcast Sunday morning in February.

There is an indoor food market every day from Tuesday to Sunday (plus Monday in the summer), but on Sunday mornings it spills out into the square to offer a profusion of fruit and veg, as well as clothing and other items on the promenade that runs parallel to the seafront.

In the square was the normal selection of calçots (what else at this time of year), and plenty of locally grown fruit and vegetables, as well as that from not so near such as strawberries.

After the food market we walked to Passeig de Mar where the clothing stalls are situated; this is the point on the expedition that I wandered off to the beach to take some photos of the sea instead.

One thing noticeable was how many people went even off-season. The many bars and restaurants in the area must certainly benefit from the additional patronage and in summer I can only imagine how busy it gets.

When and where does it take place?

The outdoor market at Sant Feliu de Guíxols takes place every Sunday at Plaça Mercat and Passeig de Mar.
