Shopping in Platja d’Aro

In Platja d’Aro you’ll find a great choice of shops, whatever it is you need. No wonder it’s popular throughout the year.

No matter what the time of year, Platja d’Aro’s always seems to be busy. A little wonder when you realise the sheer number and variety of shops in the town. On the high street and thereabouts you can shop in the stores of both international retail brands as well as much smaller local retailers.

Along the way you’ll also find quite a few restaurants, bars and cafes where you can relax between purchases. Perhaps sip something warm for the winter or refreshing in the the summer but either way putting your feet up for a while.

As well as the high street there is also a retail park near the marina. There you’ll find a number of larger stores. These should cover just about all your needs for sporting goods, DIY, home furnishings and electrical appliances.

The town also has numerous supermarkets including the usual chains found throughout Spain as well as smaller eco-friendly supermarkets. There is also a weekly market held every Friday where you can buy all kinds of things.

So let’s dive in and take a look at what’s what in Platja d’Aro when it comes to shops and shopping.

High street

Anyone wanting to indulge in a little retail therapy should head to Platja d’Aro’s long high street. There you’ll find a whole range of Spanish and international fashion brands.

I won’t list them all but they include Mango, Massimo Dutti and Natura as well as Swarovski, Desigual and Swatch. For a more comprehensive list see the map above, but once you’re on the high street I doubt you need my help.

Most of the shops around here sell clothes, shoes, jewellery, perfume or handbags and suit a variety of tastes and budgets. You can buy other goods here too, such as household goods and curtains.

Market

The market is held every Friday between 8am and 1pm in the free car park opposite Carrefour. As you approach the high street from the direction of Castell d’Aro it’s on the left.

The market has a large number of stalls selling food, clothing, luggage, jewellery, shoes, toys kitchenware… and just about anything else you can think of. Watch the video about for an idea of what you’ll find there in the summer.

Just make sure you don’t leave your car in this car park overnight. They’ll tow it if it’s in the way.

Supermarkets

Platja d’Aro has a large selection of supermarkets. The big name supermarkets are Mercadona, Carrefour, Bonpreu, Caprabo, Aldi and Lidl. You’ll also find smaller locally owned supermarkets, some of which sell eco-friendly products. You can read more about supermarkets here.

For wine or a huge variety of other alcoholic drinks visit Wine Palace. They are based in two locations in Platja d’Aro and marked on the map.

Second hand furniture

Before you reach Port d’Aro on the way to S’Agaró you’ll find a second hand shop called Petits Encants. It’s pink, so hard to miss.

While at times it doesn’t have much of interest, at others it is quite full of furniture and other stuff. We recently bought a set of good quality dining chairs for €5 apiece. We also bought a solid wood coffee table there a few years ago. You may not find anything you like, but it is worthwhile looking at if you’re in the area.

Park d’Aro retail park

The retail park includes a cinema that sometimes shows English language films and a bowling alley. But for the purpose of this article we’re just sticking to the non-supermarket shops. Here the stores range in size from medium to huge and there is loads of parking.

Decathlon

If you like to buy all your sports equipment and clothing from under one roof then you’ll love Decathlon in Platja d’Aro.

Open seven days of the week from 9 am until 10 pm this huge caters from just about any sport you can think of. During the summer you’ll find aisle upon aisle of beachwear, parasols, diving equipment and kayaks, while in the winter it’s full of skis,  snowboards and all the clothing and accessories to go with it.

It also caters for cyclists, horse riders, hunters, golfers, tennis-ists, runners, marshal artists, boxers, weight lifters, body builders and who knows what else. If you’re a diver then you can fill your air tank here and it’s the cheapest I’ve seen anywhere.

Leroy Merlin

While it’s not as comprehensive as Bauhaus in Girona, Leroy Merlin has a good range of materials for the DIY enthusiast.

They have everything you’d expect to find in a DIY store including heating, cooling, kitchens, lighting and electrical, gardens, carpentry, bathrooms and painting and decorating.

It’s open every day from 9 am to 9 pm so you’ll never be too delayed when you realise you are lacking a screw, tool or something else needed to complete a job – even on a Sunday evening!

Casa

Casa is a Belgian retailer with the stated aim of making your home cozy. They offer a range of household items that are both decorative and functional.

Jysk

Danish company Jysk sells household goods, furniture and interior decor. We bought our dining table from here and had it delivered.

Worten

This Portuguese retailer sells all kinds of electrical appliances from televisions, smartphones and computers to washing machines, fridges and vacuum cleaners.
