Full time resident living in or near Platja d’Aro? Need something to watch now that the British Freeview channels are no longer available via satellite? Perhaps Ocine Platja d’Aro is the answer.
Now that satellite broadcasts from the BBC, ITV and other channels have been effectively switched off from the Costa Brava (and most of Europe) it is far more difficult to find something even half decent to watch.
Limited options for English TV
Spanish and Catalan television is, on the whole, not up to the standard of UK TV and you may not speak the languages well enough to follow them. Even if you do it is sometimes good to be able to just relax and watch everything in English, at least once in a while.
There are films and programmes in English of course, provided your television has Dual sound, which allows you to switch to the original soundtrack.
And there are a number of popular television series, mainly American, that are shown in blocks; witness “Criminal Minds”, for example, which can be shown starting at 10pm and going on until 2am or later.
Who has the inclination to do that though? And they skip around from series to series, with no logic whatsoever.
There are DVDs and downloads of course. If you have an internet connection you can connect to iTunes provided you have a UK account and download and watch a film if you have the write equipment and cables for your TV set.
Watch film in English on the big screen
That is where Ocine in Platja d’Aro comes in. Although the majority of films are shown dubbed into Spanish, they also screen films in the original language with Spanish subtitles. That means English language films shown in English!
Although it is only once or twice a month, you can find forthcoming English language films listed on the Ocine website:
Visit the website for current and forthcoming films here, and look out for the posters announcing “Original Language Version” on the right hand side. The films are not the latest releases, but they are fairly recent.
