Violent criminal gang arrested in police raids while admitting Baix Empordà is difficult to patrol against burglaries
February 9, 2013Four men were arrested yesterday morning in connection with a string of burglaries in the Baix Empordà.
The three Moroccans and a Spaniard were arrested in an operation that involved four addresses to be raided simultaneously in Palafrugell and Santa Cristina d’Aro. The gang, accused of using violence during the robberies, was believed be be planning more break-ins imminently.
There has been a big increase in the number of burglaries taking place in the area of late, perhaps due to the ongoing economic crisis and chronic unemployment.
Unrelated to the arrests directly, a police spokesman explained during a television interview on Thursday night that police are due to set up a total of 233 checkpoints this week. He acknowledged the difficulty of patrolling the area thanks to there being 255 separate urbanisations in the Baix Empordà.
