Timber from 2012 Ampurdan fires exported to Italy
February 2, 2013A local company has exported 5,000 tonnes of wood chip and timber burnt during the fires in the Ampurdan last summer.
The wood is being loaded on a boat at Palamos destined for southern Italy, where it will be used to generate electricity as well as being used to make boxes for packing fruit. The wood is all pine, which unlike oak does not regrow after being burnt.
Last summer saw huge areas of the Ampurdan destroyed by fires in which a number of people lost their lives.
