The state of Spanish politics

August 7, 2013

Some of the decisions being made by the current Spanish government are simply beyond comprehension, clearly demonstrating at least one foot back in Spain’s Francoist past, while passing Banana republic style laws.

Take Gibraltar for instance. The people there have had the chance on two occasions to make their voice clear about whether they wanted to become part of Spain, and in both referendums they were clear: no!

Spain has currently been threatening all kinds of sanctions against Gibraltar and the UK, but the treats are hollow, a little like North Korean sabre rattling.

A €50 fee for crossing the border?

Sure, who is that going to harm do you think? The 10,000 Spaniards who reply upon low unemployment in Gibraltar perhaps? On the Spanish side of the border unemployment is, reportedly, 37%!

And if Spain acts against Gibraltar what will that do for British tourism? I think they are more inclined to go elsewhere.

And what about the new energy tax? To date solar panels have been subsidised by the government, which seems an excellent idea for businesses and home owners to generate their own clean power.

But now the subsidies are being done away with and people generating solar power will be taxed for it, to the extent that many would be better off buying power from the grid,

What planet are these politicians living on? There is no way they can or should be trusted to run a supposedly first world country. It’s not that there is much good in other parties, it’s the whole political class that is self serving and only interested in grabbing whatever they can for themselves.

Little wonder that Catalonia wants to break away, although whether Catalan politicians are any better is debatable.
