Storms hit Costa Brava closing port of Roses

March 7, 2013

The port of Roses was closed on Wednesday due to massive waves caused by the storms sweeping a large part of the Costa Brava, while access to the beaches in Lloret de Mar was cut off by police.

Estartit saw seven metre waves, while at l’Escala they were measured at five metres high and four metres in Palamós. Trains were also affected into Barcelona where, on the Maresme coast, the railway runs next to the sea forcing one track to be closed. Inland was also affected, with the rivers Ter and Fluvià in danger of bursting their banks near Girona.

The rain has finally stopped after three intense days of rainfall but it will take some time for water levels to subside. Hopefully the recent weather will have a positive affect on reservoirs, which have tended in recent years to suffer lower and lower water levels.
