Spanish PM further implicated in Bárcenas scandal
July 10, 2013Documents published by El Mundo yesterday implicate Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy in the financial scandal by showing that he received illegal payments from former PP treasurer Luis Bárcenas, who is currently awaiting trial for massive fraud.
While Bárcenas is alleged to have squirrelled tens of millions of Euros in a number of bank accounts in Switzerland and other countries, The documents show Rajoy and other politicians received much smaller payments on the PP’s secret ledger, less than €25,000. While that doesn’t make it forgivable, it does make you wonder why someone would risk so much for relatively small payments.
This story still has some way to run, but whereas in any normal country those implicated will feel obliged to resign, that never seems to happen in Spain. The country still has a long way to go to clear out this type of corruption that is endemic.
