Ryanair slashes winter flights to Girona
October 7, 2013Ryanair is slashing the number of routes served from Girona-Costa Brava Airport this winter, and furthermore cutting the frequency of flights on the remaining routes.
Over the summer the Irish airline flew to 67 different destinations from Girona, but this month sees that number cut back to just 19. This works both ways of course because not only will Catalans not be able to fly elsewhere so easily or cheaply, but – and this is much more important in the current economy – it will make Girona, the Costa Brava and Barcelona more difficult to get to from elsewhere, with a negative impact on tourism on which Catalona is so dependent.
Of course it is a shame on the local people who will, no doubt, soon find themselves out of work as a result, but it perhaps also shows that Ryanair’s business model was never sustainable over the long term anyway. Cutting costs to the bare minimum and hardly offering any kind of service whatsoever is fine as far as it goes, but what happens when you can’t cut costs any further and can’t make a profit on €10 fares?
