PP rejects proposed Catalonia financial plan – presented by head of PP in Catalonia

In an attempt to win back some of the ground lost in Catalonia through denying premier Artur Mas the opportunity to discuss greater autonomy for Catalonia, including more control over finances, the head of PP in Catalonia, Alicia Sánchez-Camacho, yesterday presented a new financial plan for Catalonia to her part’s national committee.

Naturally, the her plans were thrown out, dashing her hopes to regain some support for PP in Catalonia. While prime minister Mariano Rajoy is apparently under intense pressure to sort out the political crisis caused by his own intransigence over Catalonia, as usual it seems to little too late anyway.

Support for independence skyrocketed after his refusal to talk to Mas, as demonstrated by the demonstrations in Barcelona on 11th September last year and the human chain across Catalonia on the same date this year, also confirmed by the polls. PP seems to think that taking a hard line approach demonstrates strength (just look at Gibraltar) but all it shows is a party that still has one foot firmly in the Franco era.

I have no idea what was in Sánchez-Camacho’s proposal, but you can bet that it was nowhere good enough anyway. But the fact that her masters in Madrid snubbed her idea just shows how far removed they are from the reality in Catalonia.
