Plans to extend Ampurdan’s natural parks
October 23, 2013 Leave your thoughtsThe Ampurdan is to be one of the biggest beneficiaries of the European Union’s planned enlargement of protected natural areas.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment has begun the process of public consultation regarding the 39 areas of special protection and 4 new marine sites in compliance with European guidelines, which run until mid November.
The plans include creating a protected zone that incorporates the offshore submarine canyons of Cap de Creus and Lacaze-Duthiers, further extending the existing protected area off the Cap de Creus coast up to French territorial waters. The proposal also includes additional protection of the coastline from the French border down to Palamós to help preserve the sea bird populations along this stretch of coastline, covering the bays of Roses and Palamós along the way.
