Planned law change may see new Ikea in Salt

December 2, 2013 Leave your thoughts

The Catalan government is planning on a change in trading laws that will allow Swedish furnature company Ikea to open a store at Salt, near Girona.

The company has been eager to open a store in Salt for some time, but has been prevented from doing so by  strict Catalan planning laws that restrict large stores from opening in comarca capitals, such as Girona, and urban areas. Ikea has looked at alternatives in the north of Catalonia, but still favours Salt.

The company will not make a final decision on Salt until the law change comes into effect. The impact on the local economy is not inconsiderable, with 300 jobs created directly and another 50 created as a knock on effect.
