One dead, one critical in Costa Brava “balconing” falls

August 1, 2013

There have been two more accidents caused through the practice of “balconing” this week, leaving a Polish teenager in intensive care in Girona and a German dead. Both accidents were caused in the early hours of the morning and, no doubt, both had been drinking.

Just in case you hadn’t heard the term, balconing is the term used to describe jumping from balcony to balcony in a hotel or holiday apartment, or jumping from balcony into the pool. It is almost always foreign men who are injured this way, bringing their holiday to a sudden end and misery to their families and, sometimes, being confined to a wheelchair for life.

There have been campaigns to make youngsters more aware of the dangers, but they obviously haven’t got through, or at least not to everyone and in towns such as Lloret police supposed to be clamping down on hotels that turn a bling eye.

However, it is difficult to legislate against stupidity and however invincible balconing practitioners may feel, it is only stupid and selfish.
