New plans for historic citadel in Roses
May 31, 2013The citadel in Roses are to be turned into a historic city park according to reports. While the museum will charge a fee for entry, access into the area within the walls will be free.
The area has been improved since the 1980s with the aid of funding from various sources, with the last plan completed 20 years ago. The new plan will continue to build on the work already done. The aim is to promote the historical and cultural heritage of Roses, naturally with one eye on the opportunities for tourism.
The citadel dates to the 16th century to protect the city against pirates from North Africa, who raided many towns along the Costa Brava. The city was also raided by famed pirate Barbarossa from Turkey. Earlier settlements date back to Greek and Roman times, with remains that are believed to be from the fifth and second centuries BC respectively.
