Medes sea bream population bucks general trend as numbers continue to decline
October 30, 2013A quarter of a century of protection of the Medes Islands has benefitted virtually all species, according to one of the largest studies undertaken on the Mediterranean to date.
The study compared the number and size of various species vulnerable to fishing and showed that the populations of grouper, sea bass and sards (I forget what it is in English) have recovered almost to where they were when the marine reserve was first formed
However, one species has not done so well. The gilthead sea bream population has declined, which the study suggests may be due to fishing at the edge of the reserve.
