Medes marine life affected by undeclared divers

October 3, 2013

Girona’s Associació de Naturalistes (Naturalist’s Association) has made a complaint to the public prosecutor regarding irregularities by some dive centres operating trips to the Medes Islands off Estartit, which they claim has resulted in too many dives.

The Medes are a protected area and diving is supposed to be controlled, with dive centres collecting a tax levy from each diver. However, the association accuses some dive centres of not complying, resulting in more immersion than are supposed to take place; the increase in the number of divers impacts delicate marine life and affects biodiversity.

Having dived the Medes on many occasions I know that system has always been self regulating, and this highlights how it can be open to abuse.
