Just 5% of tourist properties in Catalonia legally registered following new law

More than 40% of the 21 thousand properties registered for tourist rentals in Catalonia are concentrated in Girona, according to data from the l’Associació Turística d’Apartaments (ATA, or Association of Tourism Apartments).

However, a recent law was introduced requiring properties rented out for tourism to be registered but figures suggest that some 160 thousand such properties have failed to register. That’s just 5% of the total that are currently legal, no doubt due to many being foreign owned whose owners are unaware of the new requirements.

Rental agencies no doubt inform owners of these requirements, but if the rentals are being done privately or overseas then who is to notify these owners?
