Increase in foreign bookings for rural tourism compensate for drop in domestic demand

August 9, 2013

Earlier in the tourist season there was some concern about booking for rural tourism, which traditionally has been focused on the domestic market.

However, new figures show that rural tourism on the coast is booked to 90% occupancy, with last minute bookings expected to take that to 100%. Internally the figures are similar to last year, with 80% occupancy inland and 60% in the mountains.

What does appear to have changed though is the demographic of people engaged in rural tourism; a big increase in the numbers of French, Dutch, Danish and German tourists has filled the gap caused by a drop in domestic demand.
