Heat wave brings on jellyfish plague

August 6, 2013

The recent heat wave being endured on the Costa Brava means that beaches are now plagued with jellyfish, with the Red Cross reporting 885 treatments administered by lifeguards since mid July.

As soon as the water temperature rises, jellyfish start swimming closer to the shore and certainly on Riells beach in l’Escala yesterday there was a yellow flag due to the danger of jellyfish and a family hooked out a rather large specimen onto the beach.

Several years ago I remember a real plague of jellyfish, more noticeable since I was frequently diving. This year doesn’t seem as bad as that, but there are still a few weeks to go.
