Half of moorings at Empuriabrava go unpaid as port authority finally reacts

March 2, 2013

The company that manages the canal network at Empuriabrava has blocked the moorings of a total of 55 properties for non-payment of fees. The company decided to take action back in November against roughly half the 5,000 property owners who do not pay their annual mooring fee.

According to reports, many owners are unaware that they are supposed to pay for the privilege of their mooring. Quite why this should be is unclear; surely the management company should have been notifying owners regularly before now and taken action when and where appropriate, rather than letting it build up to the situation today.

If all property owners paid their fees, which directly affects anyone with a boat since it pays for local marine services, the company would collect some €1.35 million. Collecting just half that leaves a big hole in their finances; one that is a bit too large to overlook.

Incompetence? Probably. But it is a little difficult to imagine just why and how this has been overlooked until now.
