Girona restaurant takes top spot in annual awards

April 30, 2013

Girona’s El Celler de Can Roca was named as the best restaurant in the world yesterday, taking over the top spot from Denmark’s Noma. ‘El Celler’ is was opened in 1997 by three brothers and specialises in avant-guarde Catalan gastronomy.

Diners wanting a table at the weekend must already wait almost a year for a free booking, which can only get worse, showing once again that even in this economy businesses can be successful provided they have the right product for the right market.

Meanwhile Heston Blumenthal’s former number one The Fat Duck dropped 20 places to 33, although Dinner, at Hyde Park’s Mandarin Oriental, rose to number 7 in the list.
