January sees passenger numbers at Girona-Costa Brava airport lowest since 2003

February 14, 2013

The number of passengers travelling to Girona-Costa Brava Airport in January fell to the lowest in the last decade according to figures just released.

According to AENA, the Spanish airport authority, 79 thousand passengers used the airport in January, which is 9 thousand fewer than in the same month in 2012. The drop in passenger numbers represents a fall of 10.2% and is the lowest number to use the airport since April 2003.

The airport has expanded massively throughout the last ten years after Ryanair set up its operations there to create a major European hub, which has benefited the area economically. However, the the Irish company sometimes seems to have too much clout and frequently threatens to withdraw from the airport completely whenever the question of airport fees or subsidy withdrawals is raised.
