Generalitat extends anti-crime initiative to cover all Catalonia
January 25, 2013 Leave your thoughtsThe Generalitat has extended its initiative to counter violent robberies to cover the whole of Catalonia, despite saying violent assault is not rising. The aim of the project is to prevent crime by allocating more resources to such things as joint patrols by the local police and Mossos d’Esquadra.
The initiative began in in Platja d’Aro in November following the murder of a businessman, was then extended to Girona and two days ago extended the rest of Catalonia. The Catalan interior minister said that although this type of crime has remained level over the last decade, the murder of Jordi Comas raised the profile of violent crime.
Assaults in Catalonia rose from 532 to 567 between 2011 and 2012, with 60% of the crimes being solved. However, in Girona violence has risen 86% in the same period.
It has certainly been noticeable that police have been more visible on the roads leading into Platja d’Aro
