European regulation change sees Ampurdan olive oil lose status

May 2, 2013

Olive oil from the Ampurdan has lost its status as a DO (denominació d’origen in Catalan), at least for the time being.

The change in status is due to modifications in the European regulations requiring olive oil producers to adapt, but a spokesman expects recognition of the DO to be provisionally restored in about two months.

The DO system covers mainly wines and is similar to the system in France and Italy, but is extended to cover certain foods in Spain too. The idea is to regulate the quality and geography of certain marques, in this case the DO Oli de l’Empordà, or Ampurdan Olive Oil.
