Controversial Spanish coastal law reform passed
May 11, 2013The government has successfully amended Spain’s coastal laws which many people are afraid will mean less regulation of Spain’s already overbuilt shores.
While the PP government claims that the updated law will further protect the coastline while extending protection to owners of existing properties, many have their doubts; the party has little credibility thanks to broken election pledges and a string of financial scandals anyway.
While the current laws sometimes make no sense – I know of a house built within 20 metres of the shoreline that is simply falling apart as the owner is not allowed to even maintain it, which surely would be a better option – it did at least stop the 30% of the coast that is unspoilt from being built on.
