Catalonia sees zero mushroom mortality in 2013 (so far)

The number of people in Catalonia dying after eating poisonous mushrooms stands at zero during 2013 according to reports, with the last mortality being recorded in 2011.

On the other hand, non-fatal poisoning has increased from thirty-three in 2011 to forty last year. According to an expert at Barcelona University, this increase is due to the craze for mushroom picking, although I would have thought that would also see an increase in the number of fatalities too.

However, said expert explains this by saying there is an increased familiarity with the more highly toxic mushrooms compared with a few years ago; this pattern of mild poisoning has been repeated this year, with 12 cases treated in just one hospital over the last five weeks.

I’ll stick to buying mushrooms from the shops, even though a couple of years ago our front lawn produced quite a crop of fungi of some kind.
