Catalonia among 5 regions to appeal Coastal Act in Constitutional Court

July 4, 2013 Leave your thoughts

A number of regions including Catalonia are to appeal the revised Coastal Act in Spain’s constitutional court.

There has been much criticism of the law, which was introduced by the PP government earlier in the year and relaxes the stringent laws relating to building on the coast. Much of Spain’s coastline has been spoilt by overconstruction (yes, I’m looking at you Lloret) and the laws were designed not only to control new buildings within a certain distance from the coast but also to allow for demolition of existing buildings, or at least not allow them to be maintained and allowing them to crumble over time.

While one of PP’s stated aims was to make it fairer for people who owned existing properties, their history of corruption (seriously, can you trust anything they say) means few trust their real motives.

The other regions appealing the law are Andalusia, Asturias, the Canaries and the Basque Country that, with Catalonia, make up half of Spain’s coastline.
