Catalan declaration of sovereignty ruled unconstitutional
May 13, 2013 Leave your thoughtsBack in January the Catalan Generalitat stuck two fingers up at Madrid by provocatively declaring Catalonia a “sovereign political and legal entity” following the Mariano Rajoy’s refusal to even discuss further autonomy for Catalonia and specifically the issue of finance.
However, last week Spain’s constitutional court declared that Catalonia’s declaration of sovereignty was null and void after a legal complaint was made on the grounds of the declaration challenging the constitution.
The Catalan government is currently pushing to hold a referendum on independence in 2014, which so far has gone unchallenged in the courts but is likely to see friction in the coming months.
