Cadaqués council bans invasive plants
October 24, 2013The mayor of Cadaqués has recently announced that the local council has banned its citizens from planting invasive plants.
It has taken this decision after monitoring the work of the Biophere Association, which to date has removed seven tonnes of carpobrotus, commonly known as pigface, from Cap de Creus. Local police are being instructed to ask anyone who is seen to be growing such plants to remove them and if they fail to act on this request to report them to the council, who will issue a fine.
Pigface originally comes from South Africa and currently covers some 5% of Cap de Creus having thrived in the conditions found there for some reason; obviously the plant loves strong wind, bitingly cold winters and hot summers. A question though; are the police seriously going to spy on Cadaqués gardens and are they qualified to accurately identify the offending plants?
Not if they read the Diari de Girona article below, that’s for sure. The author says carpobrotus is cat’s claw, but some quick research on the Internet suggests they are wrong. I’m not much of a gardener, so perhaps I’m wrong, but there does seem to be room for error.
