Begur offers scorpionfish gastronomy

April 21, 2013

Until June 9th a number of restaurants in Begur will be focusing on the scorpionfish. 18 restaurants are taking part in the “Campanya gastronòmica del Peix de Roca” that this year celebrates its 15th anniversary.

You can find scorpionfish when diving in some areas of the Costa Brava. They are an ugly reddish fish with poisonous protective spines that they use to defend themselves, known in French as “rascasse”. They tend to remain on the sea bed in rocky areas where they blend into the scenery only to dart off when disturbed. While the venom in the local ones is not severe, in some areas of the world the are species that are extremely toxic.

Alongside regular menus the restaurants will be offering tasting menus with a number of dishes cooked with scorpionfish. A menu is available in Catalan from the official Begur website here.
