Armed robbers threaten Platja d’Aro home owners

October 4, 2013 Leave your thoughts

Last winter saw a spate of armed robberies on the Costa Brava, particularly in the area in and around Platja d’Aro. While police stepped up their efforts to prevent such crimes, there was a big jump recorded compared with previous years, although local police say the robbery is out of the ordinary now as cases have been reduced by 21 percent since they began targeting such crimes.

No doubt the economic situation across Spain aggregates the situation, and we are still a long way off from turning the corner, let alone returning to growth. However, a robbery in The Platja d’Aro area earlier this week perhaps indicates that the spate of robberies is about to return to the Costa Brava, arriving earlier than in 2012.

These criminals often target elderly people in isolated spots, tying them up while searching for a safe. The robbery that occurred this week was undertaken by three masked men armed with guns and knives. They tied up their victims and threatened them in order to force them to hand over valuables, although they were not actually assaulted. The men are said to have been speaking Castilian with a foreign accent.
