Ampurdan sees 70% drop in roadside prostitution in 6 months
April 4, 2013One of the regular features of many roads in the Alt Empordà were the unbelievable number of roadside prostitutes, often seen in summer sitting on a white plastic garden chair in the shade of a parasol – or simply a vacant white chair.
The N-II at one time was particularly popular, perhaps because of the sheet amount of commercial traffic from all over Europe hauling cargoes to and from Barcelona while avoiding motorway tolls. It painted a poor image of the area from the point of view of the tourist, while being dangerous for both traffic and the girls involved.
Now it has been announced that in the six months since June, since when a €2,000 fine is levied on girls soliciting for business on the road, the number of roadside prostitutes has fallen by 70%; no doubt many have moved to other areas where they can avoid large fines.
Prostitution is legal in Spain with many legal brothels, usually advertised as “clubs” on busy roads.
