Ampurdan olive oil set to regain protected status

October 14, 2013 Leave your thoughts

Last April Ampurdan olive oil received a setback when it lost its protected DO status due to changes in EU regulations.

Since then former DO Empordà oil producers have been adapting to meet the requirements of the new regulations and expect that the next harvest will comply thanks to their early start in adapting. They believe that in principal they will be recognized as early as next week and soon be awarded provisional certification, with full certification in one to two years.

Hopefully the benefits of being a recognized DO outweigh the costs and time taken in working to Europe’s standards, but as is often with the EU, the change in regulations came at a particularly bad time with Spain’s continuing economic crisis. Such change in regulations make more sense when times are good, otherwise it seems like kicking an industry when it is already down.
