Airport agreements with Ryanair to be investigated by Europe
October 18, 2013The European Commission has opened an investigation to look at whether the agreements between public authorities and Ryanair broke regulations prohibiting payments to an airline in exchange for using an airport. The investigation was prompted by another airline issuing a complaint against what it considered to be illegal payments to the Irish airline.
Agreements with both Girona-Costa Brava and Reus airports are under investigation between the Generalitat and (in the case of the former) Girona council.
Ryanair has in the past strong armed airports into agreeing favorable terms, and have threatened to abandon its hub at Girona over disputed landing fees and other benefits.
