3,000 lose power and trains delayed as fierce winds bite Catalonia
February 4, 2013Winds gusting up to 174km/h affected much of the Costa Brava and across Catalonia on Sunday, with falling trees affecting railways and electricity supplies.
Trains on the Barcelona-Portbou line were delayed by a tree falling on the line near Sils, while 3,000 properties went without electricity thanks to fallen pylons.
The Alt Empurdà is used to the powerful Tramuntana, which blows icy winds off the Pyrenees but yesterday’s winds were more widespread. Today the weather has settled down after low overnight temperatures, which are expected to dip further on Friday.
