Runners battle freezing conditions to take part in local marathon

640 athletes completed the first ever Marató de les Vies Verdes, a marathon and half marathon run along  the region’s country tracks yesterday in freezing conditions. The full marathon started in Girona, with the start of the half marathon being in Llagostera.

More than one thousand runners participated in the event after a night that saw temperatures plunge as low as minus seven degrees Celcius in some areas, with the winner, Hugo Figueras, crossing the line in Sant Feliu de Guíxols marina with a time of 2 hours 39 minutes 46 seconds, four minutes ahead of the silver medalist; Figueras recently won the Costa Daurada marathon on January 20th.

Organisers are already looking forward to preparing for next year’s race.
