Blanes beaches

Blanes has several kilometres of beaches of fairly coarse sand maintained by the local authority and well as more secluded cloves. While not the best sand to make sand castles, it means it doesn’t stick to everything and is fairly easy to brush off. Beaches are cleaned and raked during the high season and sand added when required due to erosion throughout the year. You get all the normal facilities such as showers, toilets and first aid points and a number of xiringuitos, the beach bars that serve cold drinks and snacks.

Off the beach you’ll find the spectacular rock of Sa Palomera, often considered to mark the start of the Costa Brava. The main beach in Blanes is located in the heart of the old town between Sa Palomera and the port. It’s around 650 metres long. Ideal for families with small children, this beach has a children’s club.

At this this fenced in area you can leave your children for an hour or two in the care of supervisors. While the promenade and beach are pleasant the sea front is rather spoilt by the apartment buildings. Once you get into the network of streets behind the seafront though you find the real Blanes.

The Tordera delta is sometimes considered to be the start of the Costa Brava too. And between the mouth of the Tordera and Sa Palomera is S’Abanell beach with more than two kilometres of spectacular sand. It’s one of the Costa Brava’s longest beaches but suffers from sand erosion during stormy weather. The beach also has a children’s club.

You’ll also find smaller beaches at the Cala de Sant Francesc, a sandy cove surrounded by pines. Also known as Cala Bona, Cala de Sant Francesc is a couple of kilometres from Blanes and only 200 metres or so wide. The water gets deep quite quickly so it’s not ideal for kids and the facilities are quite basic. Cala de Sant Francesc can be reached on foot by a coastal path or by road and there is nearby car park.

You can also find a nearby shingle beach at Cala Sa Forcanera. Also known as Platja de Santa Anna or Platja dels Capellans, it lies between the convent and the Marimurtra botanic gardens. Once again the facilities are pretty basic.
