The Costa Brava’s best beaches #7: Mateua

August 22, 2013 Leave your thoughts

I first found out about this small bay in l’Escala when I leaned to dive back in 2002, as it has both shallow water and goes down to 5 or 6 metres which is good to train new divers, and has a small island that is good to explore.

As well as training new divers – it has a submarine tunnel through which you can swim – the island is often used by youngsters to scale as high as possible before jumping off into the depths.

It is great for snorkelling as it is full of boulders from the cliffs that are gradually being eroded and in fact on the westerly end there are the remains of a wreck that was driven onto the rocks in the 1960s after an engine failed in bad weather and it was shattered against the rocks.

While the beach itself is small, there are many rocks which can be used to sunbathe and it is from these rocks that you can enjoy snorkelling in relative peace and quiet – rare to find in the height of summer.
