The Costa Brava’s best beaches #5: El Port de la Selva

August 15, 2013 Leave your thoughts

I used to go to Port de la Selva every August for a fortnight and so know the town extremely well. While the sand is a little fine and, as a result, clings to everything and the water a couple of degrees colder than further down the coast, it can be unbelievably tranquil and because of the protection offered by the bay the water tends to be extremely calm, almost like swimming in a lake, unless the Tramuntana is blowing.

While staying there we used to divide our time between a number of beaches, we would often return to the main beach for an evening swim while watching the sun descend behind the mountains. Watching the last rays of sunshine reflected off the whitewashed walls of the old fishermen’s cottages and the church while in the water was always a treat.

Although the town has been developed further than it need to be over the last 15 years, it still remains at heart a quiet little fishing village and largely unknown to tourists from the UK and other coutries, it is a usualy destination for wealthy Catalans living in the city who often own second (and third) homes there; that means it’s not cheap, but to stay there makes you feel privileged.
