The Costa Brava’s best beaches #4: Sant Pol

August 13, 2013 Leave your thoughts

The beach at Sant Pol in s’Agaró can get a little crowded at times, particularly during August weekends, but once again it has ample parking and plenty of facilities including a variety of restaurants. I’ve never eaten there (at least, not yet), but the smells from the kitchen of La Taverna del Mar are incredible.

The area is one of the most exclusive on the Costa Brava, with the Hostal de la Gavina having played home from home by a variety of stars of stage and screen over the decades, including Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, Orson Welles, Bogart and Bacall, Liz Taylor and Sean Connery. On the other side of the Hostal is the beach of Sa Conca, which many people rate highly, yet I don’t particulalrly like much.

The water tends to be quite calm and most of it is on a shallow slope, although this year I noticed that the sand has been eroded from a section of beach near the brightly coloured beach huts next to the balneari. This has the effect of exposing the rock below, which inevitably ends up finding your toe.

I’ve always parked on the road or in a free car park behind the row of shops near the roundabout, which is easier to do at some periods than other.

The water can be a little cool, but the bay containing the beach is pleasant to look at from the water, particularly la Gavina, with its nautical flags that spell out “SAGARO”, and the end nearer Sant Feliu with its modernista houses.

There are also a variety of small hotels near the beach and a selection fo restaurants that I’ve yet to check out. They tend to get quite busy in peak season, so not serving up anything that keeps customers away. However, all in all it is an attractive resort and if you’ve got money to spend then you can easily live in luxury here.
