The Costa Brava’s best beaches #2: Platja d’Aro

August 6, 2013

The beach consists of a stretch of 2 kilometres of course grained sand and with good free parking close to the beach there is always space there and you won’t be packed in with sardines, which is one thing we really hate.

The beach front is characterised by a row of highrise apartments and hotels, which don’t do much for the looks of the town, and have the problem of putting the beach into shade from around 6 pm in the summer.

However, on the whole the beach is comfortable to get to and comfortable to find space on, although the sand steeply shelves once you’re in the water for much of the length of the beach.

There are many restaurants and bars along the promenade, shopping and other facilities, which make this a good choice, although kids need to be watched due to the way the water rapidly gets deep just a couple of metres from the shore.

There are floats some 50 metres or so out from the beach, which provided you’re a reasonable swimmer can be fun to swim to and rest, before diving back in again, and the northern end beyond Hotel Costa Brava should be avoided unless you really want to encounter vomiting tourists, but otherwise it’s an easy beach for many reasons.
