Roses and books to celebrate Sant Jordi

April 23, 2013 Leave your thoughts

On April 23rd each year the Diada de Sant Jordi is celebrated throughout Catalonia as lovers’ day, similar to how Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the UK and USA. The tradition is that she receives a rose, while he receives a book, and in towns all over Catalonia you can see stalls selling both.

Although Catalonia has the same patron saint as England, it is impossible to go through the day without realising that it is St Georges Day, as I often did in England. The book industry sees a huge boost in the number of sales as many people who would otherwise not buy books do on this date.
