Platja d’Aro is a great choice for your summer holidays and in July and August you’ll meet people from all over. As well as other areas of Spain, visitors to Platja d’Aro come from the UK, Europe, Russia and the United States.

While the long sandy beach is a key factor in the town’s popularity, there are a number of other reasons Platja d’Aro remains so popular. These include:

  • a great choice of restaurants

Hotels near the main beach

Cosmopolita Hotel Boutique & Spa

*** Pineda del Mar, 30

The Cosmopolita is a boutique hotel and spa right on the promenade literally metres from the beach. At the same time it’s only a few blocks from the high street too. The hotel has comfortable modern airy rooms in neutral colours, pretty much what you’d expect from a modern hotel of this standard. However, the communal areas are rather more quirky.

You’ll get the idea as soon as you enter the lobby, which is graced by a number of rather demonic looking cherubs. But as well as various sculptures throughout the hotel there are some great photos and pets are allowed on request.

The hotel boasts a rooftop pool with sun deck from where you get some great views of the Mediterranean. As well as a bar they also have, rather bizarrely, a giant plastic statue of a gorilla beating its chest. There is also a basic gym.

Cosmo Beach Restaurant serves local specialities and you’ll also find a café and snack bar. In the spa you’ll find a giant Buddha, as well as a hot tub, sauna and Turkish bath. They also offer treatments such as massage.

Hotel Planamar

*** Passeig del Mar, 82

The highly rated Planamar is located on the promenade around midway down the beach. Rooms are plainly decorated but tasteful and airy with a private balcony and most directly overlook the beach. It’s close to the centre of Platja d’Aro too, so you have easy access to a variety of other restaurants on the sea front and the high street.

The hotel boasts a heated rooftop pool with sundeck, although on both sides it is towered overlooked by apartment buildings. On one side is a tower block of some 20 or so storeys. If you’re looking for a workout the hotel also has a number of cardio machines available for guests.

The buffet restaurant serves traditional Catalan cuisine and there is also a terrace bar in front of the hotel on the promenade. There you can sip a local wine or something from the cocktail menu and they serve a variety of tapas, salads and paella. In July and August the hotel even has Balinese beds with bar service for hire right on the beach.

Hotel Spa La Terrassa

*** Avenida Castell d’Aro, 2

Hotel Spa La Terrassa is situated right in the centre of Platja d’Aro, just a few minutes from the beach.

The 100 rooms tend to be minimally decorated to the point of blandness, comfortable enough but not particularly homely. Many have a balcony, but there are none with a sea view and many overlook the street.

While it is an easy walk to the beach, La Terrassa also has an outdoor pool and spa with a heated indoor pool, sauna, steam room and hot tub and there are a variety of treatments available to guests. The hotel also has a gym equipped with various weight machines.

There are three dining rooms accommodating up to 1,000 diners including one area next to the outdoor pool. However, you’ll find a number of restaurants along the high street serving a variety of different cuisines.

Hotel Bell Repos

** Carrer Nostra Senyora del Carme, 18

This family run hotel is only a block away from the beach with its own gardens and onsite parking.

Bell Repos is rather more traditional than many of the other hotels listed here and while the rooms are quite basic they are comfortable and tastefully decorated. It’s actually rather homely in many respects. While the hotel doesn’t have a pool, there is a basic gym and the beach is so close it probably won’t matter to you anyway.

There are a variety of room types available with a balcony overlooking the garden. As well as double rooms there are singles and family rooms for three or four. Pets are accepted although the owners stipulate that they can never be left alone in the rooms. If you’ve ever had to put up with a neighbour’s dog howling when they leave it you’ll probably agree with that policy.

The restaurant serves traditional Catalan dishes and as well as the bar inside there is a comfortable terrace where you can relax with a drink or even dine out under the stars.  If you prefer to dine out the hotel is just a couple of minutes from the high street where you’ll find a great selection of bars and restaurants.

Hotel Els Pins

*** Carrer Nostra Senyora del Carme, 34

Further down the same street you’ll find Hotel Els Pins. It’s another family run hotel with 68 rooms and an easy walk to both the beach and the high street. Rooms are tastefully decorated in blue and white which, appropriately enough, lends them a rather nautical theme. There are a variety of room types including singles, triples and quads and many have balconies.

The hotel has a decent sized pool for when the beach seems like too much and there is a comfortable cocktail bar and a slightly over illuminated dining area where you can order snacks. Outdoors there is a decked bar area shaded by the pine trees after which the hotel is named.

A variety of restaurants are within walking distance both on the promenade and along the high street, so you have plenty of choice and won’t starve. Like most of the hotels listed here, Els Pins is really well located and a great choice for a beach holiday.

Guests can use the hotel’s car park or garage and pets are allowed, although you should contact the hotel prior to booking.

Out of town

While the majority of Platja d’Aro’s hotels are near to the main beach, a couple lie outside the town’s nucleus. Each is close to a small cove and so extremely privileged. These hotels are ideal if you want somewhere near to Platja d’Aro but crave a bit of solitude too.

Hotel Cala del Pi

***** Avenida Cavall Bernat, 160

This 5-star hotel boasts stunning views of the Mediterranean close to the rocky cove after which it is named. It is very highly rated by guests, in particular for its restaurant facilities, pool area and staff. Rooms have a private terrace, many of which overlook the sea. They are tastefully decorated in a classical style and well appointed.

Restaurant Aurum is headed Enric Herce and serves Mediterranean cuisine and local dishes prepared from fresh, seasonal ingredients. The restaurant also has a large cellar of carefully selected wines. For lunch the hotel also has a more casual terrace restaurant overlooking Cala del Pi.

The spectacular pool area has a large pool divided into three distinct parts, the smallest of which is suitable for children.  Here you can dry off under the sun in a pleasant area surrounded by palm trees and shrubs. And you get a great view above Cala del Pi overlooking the sea too.

The hotel also has a spa with thermal circuit and a variety of treatments. If you’re feeling energetic there is a gym too!

Park Hotel San Jorge

**** Carretera Palamós

If you’re looking for a great location it’s hard to beat this 4-star hotel overlooking two small coves. But while it actually lies inside the municipality of Calonge, Platja d’Aro is closer to Park Hotel San Jorge.

Most rooms here are decorated in an airy modern style with wooden floors and some have a terrace with a sea view. However the Belladona rooms are more traditionally Catalan with dark wood furniture and terracotta flooring.
The restaurants serve traditional Catalan dishes but when you’re looking for something a little less formal you can get drinks and snacks from the terrace café. It has great views too.

For those times you just want to swim but without that gruelling three minute walk down to the beaches the hotel has a decent sized outdoor pool. It also has spa offering a thermal circuit, hydro massage pool, sauna, Turkish bath and various treatments.
