Port de la Selva apartments

For anyone staying in Port de la Selva, apartments and other holiday homes are by far the most common type of accommodation.

While there are a few hotels in the town, the number of rooms in total is extremely limited. Port de la Selva is a long way from the large resorts further south aimed at package tourism.

Instead, many people from Barcelona and Girona own second homes along this stretch of coast. In fact, Port de la Selva has long been a preferred holiday destination for writers, politicians and artists from Catalonia.

For instance, the poet, author and playwright, Josep Maria de Sagarra, lived for some time in Port de la Selva. His 1933 play, El Cafè de la Marina, is named after a bar and restaurant that still exists today.

But while many apartments are privately owned, they are unoccupied for most of the year. Even in summer you’ll find that most homes are vacant.

Advantages of Port de la Selva apartments

So to offset part of the costs associated with running a second home, many owners let their second residences. They either use local agencies, or list them online.

The great advantage of renting an apartment is the amount of privacy you get compare with a hotel. It is a true home from home. Instead of eating out every night you can enjoy a home cooked meal in the comfort of your apartment – or on the terrace. Many properties have barbecues built in to the terrace too.

Admittedly, you’ll have to make your own bed each day. You certainly won’t have room service either. And keeping the place tidy is down to you.

But for most people the advantages of renting a holiday apartment in Port de la Selva overwhelmingly outweigh the disadvantages.

What to expect

Most rental apartments are furnished quite basically, but easily good enough for a two week holiday, but luxury properties are available at the top of the market.

Whatever your budget or requirements, before booking check to see you get everything you consider essential, such as a TV or DVD player, a hi-fi or wi-fi. But also check to see if you’ll have more basic equipment, like a washing machine or microwave.

A basic two bedroom apartment sleeping four costs from €450 per week in August. Larger properties, including houses with gardens and private swimming pools, will be several times that.

Recommended agencies

For many years we used Agència Port de la Selva, first to book a studio apartment and later for a two bedroom apartment.

The first had a terrace that faced inland, which may not sound particularly exciting, but we found it pleasant for the four or five years we used it. We then upgraded to a two bedroom apartment in the same block. You can see the view from the terrace at the top of the page! We used that apartment for many more years.

Agència Port de la Selva has a large selection of properties available and while you can search for properties listed on their website, you’re probably better off letting them know what you are after. They have always been extremely helpful.
