The choice of hotels within the S’Agaró community is limited but luckily there are options close by.
S’Agaró was originally developed as a small community of villas and hotel in the early 20th century. Josep Ensesa dreamed of a development in a style sympathetic to the pine-covered surroundings.
He first convinced his father, a wealthy industrialist, to buy the land. He then commissioned architect Rafael Masó to bring his dream to life. Masó was one of the chief proponents of noucentisme and strongly believed in traditional Catalan design. After his death in 1935 he was replaced by Gaudí disciple Francesc Folguera, who is largely responsible for Hostal de la Gavina.
The result speaks for itself. It’s a tasteful development which wouldn’t look out of place in Italy and one of the most coveted places on the Costa Brava. It’s certainly a long way from the highly developed areas of coastline.
The number of hotels in S’Agaró itself are extremely limited, although there are a number nearby. It makes a fantastic holiday location though and Sant Pol beach is a lovely stretch of sand ideal for kids.
The hotels
S’Agaró remains largely unspoilt with the choice of hotels limited to just two within the community itself.
Hostal de la Gavina
***** Plaça Roserar
Part of the original development is Hostal de la Gavina, a 5-star hotel that exudes old-school luxury and remains one of the most prestigious on the entire Costa Brava. Over the decades A-listers such as Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, Sean Connery, Robert de Niro and Lady Gaga have all stayed there. The sprawling hotel has several restaurants, a spa, swimming pool and fantastic views across the bay.
S’Agaró Hotel
**** Platja de Sant Pol
This 4-star hotel is just steps away from the beach of Sant Pol set in large gardens shaded with pine and palm trees. The hotel has a restaurant, spa, circular pool and classically decorated bedrooms with balconies.
Nearby hotels
As well as the hotels within S’Agaró itself there are a number of hotels close by in Sant Feliu de Guíxols. While they aren’t part of the exclusive S’Agaró community you’re close to Sant Pol beach and everything else you could possibly need.
Alàbriga Hotel
***** Carretera de Sant Pol, 633
The recently opened 5-star hotel offers guests everything they could want in terms of luxury. It’s located on the opposite side of the bay to Hostal de la Gavina and unashamedly modern. While it claims a prestigious S’Agaró address, the Alàbriga is actually a kilometre away. But it’s a world away from the S’Agaró ideal of sympathetic design.
Hotel Barcarola
*** Carrer Pablo Picasso, 1-19
The Barcarola is just 30 metres from Sant Pol beach with a variety of room types. Facilities include a restaurant and bar.
Hotel Sant Pol
*** Platja de Sant Pol, 125
Hotel Sant Pol is just across the street from the beach with a popular restaurant specialising in fish and local dishes. It’s hard to think of a better located hotel for a beach holiday.
Hostal del Sol
*** Carretera de Palamos, 194
This 3-star hotel is located in a modernista house dating back to the 19th century. As a result it has much more character than many modern hotels. Hostal del Sol has a couple of pools and just 500 metres from the beach.
S’Agaró Mar Hotel
**** Camí de la Caleta
Standing up on the hillside, this hotel has fantastic views across the bay towards S’Agaró. It’s also a couple of hundred metres to Sant Pol beach.
While the community itself offers relatively few accommodation opportunities, S’Agaró is right next to the edge of Sant Feliu de Guíxols and Sant Pol beach. Here there are a number of hotels close to the beach.
