Colera hotels

Colera is a small resort town with very limited accommodation options. The town is so small that off season there are fewer than 500 inhabitants.

While there are no hotels chains, there is a single 2-star hotel and two hostals. The town is near the very north of the Alt Empordà and a world away from the major tourist resorts further south. The beaches are pebble rather than sand, but if you’re looking for somewhere to really disconnect then Colera is a good bet.

You’d better be good at keeping yourself amused as there’s not much going on in the way of nightlife. And make sure you take a stack of paperbacks for the day too.

The hotels

Accommodation in Colera is extremely limited, with only one establishment classified as a hotel. However, don’t be put off by hostals, they’re nothing like hostels – think of a basic hotel or guest house. In fact, top of our list is a small hostal which is extremely highly rated by guests who have stayed there.

Hostal Totsompops

Avinguda 11 de Setembre, 7

Although located right on the edge of town, Hostal Totsompops is still only 500 metres from the beach. Well, I said that Colera is pretty small! It’s quirky accommodation with a quirky name – tot som pops translates as “we are all octopuses” in Catalan! It’s pet friendly too.

This small establishment has only four suites but both the food and staff are highly regarded. Rooms are all air conditioned and furnished in a comfortable modern style. The bathrooms don’t have a door on them though, which some people don’t like much.

The restaurant prepares dishes according to the principles of the Slow Food movement. Their moto? “Good, clean and fair”. That means you’ll be served typical Catalan dishes made from fresh local ingredients. Breakfast includes ham, cheese, toast and homemade preserves.

There is free parking, a garden and terrace and it is slightly less than a kilometre from the train station. That makes it ideal to reach from Figueres, Girona, or all the way from Barcelona. Because of the limited number of guest rooms you’re advised to book well in advance if you wish to book.

La Gambina

** Passeig Maritim, 5

This two-star hotel is right on the promenade with a view out over the bay. It offers basic accommodation for anyone on a budget but is clean and rooms have air con.

The 20 rooms all have a private bathroom and the hotel accepts pets. If you’re travelling with your furry friend you need to get in contact before arrival and let them know. From the balcony of rooms at the front of the hotel you get direct view of the bay and the town’s small harbour.

The hotel also has a restaurant and terrace where you can enjoy dinner and a glass of wine in the warm summer evenings. Expect to find fresh fish and typical Catalan cuisine.

Hostal Mont-Mercè

Carrer del Mar, 107

The Mont-Mercè is located at one end of the paved promenade on the stretch of beach closest the harbour. It offers basic but comfortable accommodation with pleasant staff.

Rooms have a small balcony with private bathrooms. These are rather old fashioned but guests have commented on the cleanliness of the hostal. There is also a tapas bar where you can enjoy food and drinks outside.

You get no traffic noise because the promenade is pedestrianised. However the hostal can be noisy due to the hustle and bustle of summer nights and slamming doors.
