Roses is a hugely popular resort in the summer months and while there are a quite a number of hotels to choose from, the vast majority of tourist properties in the town and surrounding areas are apartments.

The permanent population of Roses is nearly twenty thousand, but that swells by nearly five thousand people employed in the tourist industry over the summer. Then, nearly 100,000 tourists arrive from Spain and overseas.

Many properties are second residences owned by people from Barcelona and Girona but there are many foreign owners too. In fact a third of permanent residents are foreign.

While the town and it’s immediate outskirts are rather developed, the town is right next to the natural park of Cap de Creus. Here new buildings are completely banned. So in Roses you get the benefit of one of the principle ports of the Costa Brava with just about everything you could need. And as well as creature comforts that also means long sandy beaches and easy access to completely unspoilt nature.

Art lovers will want to see Dalì’s museums in Figueres and Portlligat, which is just along the coast near Cadaqués. You can complete the trilogy of museums by driving to Púbol too.

Advantages of Roses apartments

Sometimes a hotel is just what you need. You get you room tidied and your bed made. The bathroom cleaned and fresh towels whenever you need them. You can take breakfast and other meals in the hotel or choose to eat elsewhere. You car order drinks at the bar and order from room service.

But sometimes what you really want is your own home at the seaside. Somewhere you can choose to eat out or cook your own meals. That’s when renting an apartment in Roses makes perfect sense. And there is a great choice too, with many apartments and some houses available for holiday rental.

You’ll have to make your own bed of course. Let’s face it though, that means flipping a sheet back on the bed in August and maybe plumping up the pillows. But you massively benefit from your own home from home where you can truly relax.

What to expect

At the minimum your apartment will include the basics, but you’ll probably have to provide your own bed linen. And you can rent upmarket properties too, including private houses with a swimming pool.

Kitchens tend to be fairly basic but functional. If you’re a keen cook for instance be aware that you probably won’y find a half decent knife and may need to take your own or buy one while you’re there. Water pressure can also been an issue with so many people competing for what, these days, tends to be quite a scarce resource.

Many apartments have a balcony but even a small one can make a big difference. Ask for a photo showing the view from the terrace if that’s important. Also check if you want to take a pet as some owners allow them. Note that may be required to pay an additional fee.
